Shatterbeat

Twenty boss fights. Twenty tracks. One thumb.

Thirty seconds of one run, ending on a kill. Turn the sound on — the orbs are arriving on the beats of the track the fight is built from.

What it is

A boss fight that runs on the beat. You hold your thumb on the orb and it follows you around the ring; the boss throws things at you in time with the music; you lift your thumb to strike, and when you lift decides whether it lands. Hold longer and it hits harder. That is the whole control scheme.

Every fight is built from a real track, not a generic pulse. The orbs arrive on its beats and the patterns run on its bars, and if you outlast the song it loops and keeps going — the fight ends when you do.

It is free. Dying is not the end of a run — you get free coins to continue with, and there is one purchase that gives you unlimited continues, once, forever. No ads, no subscription.

Every track is his own

The twenty tracks the fights are built on are original music, written and produced by Phill — a former professional bassist, which is the part of the résumé that usually stays off a software site. Nothing here is a library loop or a licensed bed.

That is also why the game could exist at all. A rhythm game lives or dies on whether the chart and the music were made by the same person, and here they were.

How it's built

  • One thumb, no buttons.Hold to move, lift to strike. The timing of the lift is the skill.
  • Charge multiplies, never gates.A longer hold hits harder. Lifting early still fires — a charge that could swallow your shot reads as a broken button.
  • Twenty bosses, twenty songs. Each fight is charted against its own track.
  • Free to play.Three free coins a day buy continues. Two coin packs and a one-time FREE PLAY unlock are there if you want more. No ads, no subscription.
  • Your coins follow you.Kept in your own iCloud on iPhone and iPad, and — if you sign in to Play Games — in Play Games Saved Games on Android. They follow you between devices of the same kind. We never see them.
  • Leaderboards and achievements.Longest survival, most bosses in a run — Game Center on iPhone and iPad, Play Games on Android. Optional — the game is complete signed out.
  • Nothing comes to us.No analytics, no ads, no crash SDK, no account with us, and no server of ours anywhere in it. Signed in to Game Center or Play Games, your scores and coins go to Apple or Google — never to us.

Where it came from

Shatterbeat started as one piece of a much larger game. Wisp is a walking game that lays an invisible world over the real streets around you, and its boss fights were the part that read instantly — the part you could understand in ten seconds with the sound off.

So that part became its own game. If you like the fight, the world it came out of is the bigger thing.

Shatterbeat is now on Google Play and coming to the App Store.
